This is an example of what does not work when creating a pattern generator. Many have proposed that some sort of reciprocally connected group of neurons are responsible for pattern generation. Doing this results in either the pulses going into saturation (maximum possible frequency) or the signal disappearing completely. In addition this would take away flexibility in governing the type and timing of the pulses since their generation must be subservient to keeping the oscillation going.
